History and Philosophy
Camp Longhorn has a rich history that dates back to 1939 when it was founded by Pat Robertson and her husband, Tex Robertson. The couple started the camp on Inks Lake in the Texas Hill Country with just one paid camper and one volunteer camper. Today, Camp Longhorn has grown to become one of the most popular summer camps in Texas, with three locations that continue to uphold the same philosophy that Pat and Tex started with over 80 years ago.
Founding by Pat Robertson
Pat Robertson has been a driving force behind Camp Longhorn since its inception. At 94 years old, she is still involved in camp activities and continues to inspire campers and staff alike with her unwavering commitment to the camp's philosophy. Pat and Tex created Camp Longhorn with the goal of providing a fun and safe environment where kids could develop confidence, leadership skills, and a sense of responsibility.
Camp Longhorn Traditions
One of the things that sets Camp Longhorn apart from other summer camps is its deep-rooted traditions. According to Pat Robertson, "Fundamentally, nothing's really changed in 80 years." Campers stay in the same cabins, do the same activities, and sing the same songs as they did decades ago. These traditions help foster a sense of community and belonging among campers, many of whom return to Camp Longhorn year after year.
The Attawaytogo Spirit
The Attawaytogo spirit is a core part of Camp Longhorn's philosophy. It's a spirit of friendship, camaraderie, and perseverance that encourages campers to try new things, support one another, and never give up. This spirit is embodied in the camp's motto, "Attawaytogo," which is a phrase that campers and staff use to cheer each other on and celebrate accomplishments.
